Since Invisalign was introduced in 1997, it has exploded in popularity because of its ability to straighten teeth without the conspicuous metal parts and irksome dietary restrictions that come with traditional braces. By gradually exerting constant pressure over time through clear aligners, Invisalign can address a range of alignment issues such as underbites, overbites, and open bites. Here’s a brief guide to how Invisalign can help you achieve a healthier and more beautiful smile.

How Does Invisalign Work?

After your dentist determines that Invisalign can be a great fit for you at your consultation, the process begins with your teeth being digitally measured with a special scanning device to create a three-dimensional map of your smile. This data is used to manufacture a series of customized clear aligners. You’ll have to wear each set at least twenty hours a day for about two weeks before switching to the next set. Each pair of aligners will move your teeth a little closer to their ideal positions, and your smile should be beautifully aligned by the end of the treatment.

What Kind of Issues Can Invisalign Address?

Invisalign can correct a variety of bite issues such as:

  • Crooked teeth: Teeth that aren’t standing up straight are at a greater risk of injury and infection due to increased wear and tear.
  • Overbite: When the upper teeth protrude too far over the lower teeth, they are more vulnerable to injury and can lead to difficulty chewing certain foods.
  • Underbite: When the lower teeth rest in front of the top teeth when the mouth is closed, they may wear down more quickly and cause speech difficulties.
  • Crossbite: If a few of your upper teeth rest inside the lower teeth when the mouth is closed, they may wear down more quickly and cause gum recession.
  • Gaps: Having too much space between teeth can leave you more vulnerable to oral infections and gum injuries.
  • Crowded teeth: Having too many teeth in too small a space can make them harder to clean due to how they overlap with one another, leading to infections like tooth decay.
  • Open bite: If your top and bottom front teeth do not meet when you close your mouth, you may have difficulties with chewing.

Is Invisalign Right for Everyone?

Like any medical or dental treatment, Invisalign is not right for everyone. If your alignment is especially severe, traditional metal braces may be the best orthodontic treatment for you. Invisalign is not effective at rotating molars more than 20 degrees or adjusting tilts over 45 degrees. Irregularly shaped teeth or previous dental work like a dental bridge, veneers, or crowns may also preclude Invisalign treatment.

Invisalign clear aligners can be a great way to achieve your ideal smile. After a brief consultation with your dentist, they will be able to tell you if Invisalign can be a great fit for you.
